Message from Sue: Summer 2018

Hello my dear Silveridge friends!

This summer my letter comes to you early again by mail with Silveridge’s annual letter. My summer letter will also be online along with news from my co-editor Dale Dauten. I hope that you are all enjoying your summer and making memories with your family and friends.

Jeff and I enjoyed a road trip on the way back to Minnesota so now we are settled in and putting a new roof and painting our lake home. Fun!! The summer flies by quickly so I want to get you charged up as you start thinking about our adventure for the 2018-2019 season. Please check the website calendar for complete listings of events and times and remember that start dates are subject to change as our club leaders arrive at different times.

We will kick off with our Welcome back get-togethers on October 18^th and 25^thfollowed by our popular annual Halloween costume party. We will honor our veterans on Sunday, November 11^thfollowing our church service. On Nov. 15^th Jerry will have his fish fry along with the Uptown Angels with a performance for our veterans.

Boogie Tuesdays and Wednesday Bingo will start in November. You will want to try your luck at the new Bingo games and get your lists together for your favorite dances. I have some returning favorite bands such as Johnny K and Kompany, Come Back Buddy, Junction 87, and The Big Zephyr, (playing for our Sweetheart Ball) and more. I have added some new bands as well –such as DJ and the Midnight Sun, Soul Impressions, Cactus Wine and more. We will have another Hippie Night. Ladies, don’t forget your poodle skirts! “3 Speed” will be our band for our New Years Dance. Plan to party the Night Away! I have Prom night again and an ‘evening in red.’

December 13th will be our 7th annual Christmas Parade so be thinking how you would like to decorate your golf cart or any other moving vehicle. Still in the planning is a “Chili Cook-off” following the parade with our local Fireman judging. Entrance to the event will be a toy. All the toys will be distributed by the fire station to local families in the community. Who will be the winners for the best Chili and golf cart? Our talented decorators will have our park and ballroom glowing with Christmas lights and decorations.

You will want to add all these dinner shows and concerts to your list:

Dec.6th: “Holly Jolly Christmas” JR McAlexander will bring his Christmas magic with a Vegas caliber show filled with music, dancing and singing. His show will definitely put you in the Christmas mood!

January 17^th: “Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens and the Big Bopper” What a Winter Party this will be! If you are a Buddy Holly fan this is a not to miss show featuring all the Buddy Holly hits and his life story.

Feb 14^th: Three Men and a Tenor” A Valentine Romance. These 4 men will delight you with A Capella singing and comedy. Make sure you bring your partner. They will put you in the mood for love!

March 7^th: “Let the Good Times Roll” Mardi Gras. Jimmy Travis is back with his music and comedy. If you liked him last year you will love his new show this year. Welcome to the best Mardi Gras ever and don’t forget to wear your favorite mardi gras mask and beads! (Recognition for best outfits!)

Along with our popular dinner shows I have 6 concerts to entertain you plus our ever popular POPS orchestra!

January 10th: George Dyer- “Broadway to Buble’.” George Dyer hails from Branson and performed at Silveridge years ago. He will sing all the favorites such as Phantom of the Night and jazz it up with modern love songs.

January 31^st: Michael Paul : Ventriloquist and Comedy. A Tad Show (Tad shows are the top of the line and have brought us The Eagles, Dec of 63 and many more) Get ready to laugh until it hurts when you hear this incredibly talented and wacky ventriloquist. BYOB & Wine and Appetizers night.

February 21^st: “Motown Magic” A Tad Show. Who doesn’t love the Motown sound straight from Detroit? These guys will bring back memories of long ago days. Another concert that will make you want to dance in your seat!

February 24^th: Chicago Tribute” A Tad Show If you liked the Eagles, you will love this Chicago Tribute. The lead singer is Peter Cetera’s brother! Get ready to hear these 10 men sing Chicago’s favorite hits. Dress in your 70s outfits and get ready to dance in the aisle (*Note this is a Sunday evening performance)

March 14^th: To be announced

I am getting excited just writing about all the entertainment! We will have 4 Dinner Delights including our favorite “The Strolling Strings.” Once again we will have Elvis and Music on the Green so bring your lawn chairs and enjoy entertainment under the majestic Arizona skies! And don’t forget about the talented Jammers (Our House Band) and all the free movies and popcorn at our SilverScreen theater.

Mixed in with all the fun entertainment are all the classes, exercises and sports. Try something new this year. You are never too old to learn! How about taking some computer classes? Maybe you would like to learn how to make a quilt or paint a picture. How about working out with our new Zumba class or Step Aerobics or Tai Chi? Don’t forget favorite sports like softball, tennis, pickleball, golf or hiking-just to name a few. Thanks to our talented and giving volunteer leaders Silveridge can offer all these fabulous opportunities. Most of the classes are either free or minimal costs for supplies. If you have a talent you would like to share consider volunteering and don’t forget to thank our wonderful volunteers for all the work they do!

We are all thankful that Jerry Colling, our head chef and Tracy Gagnier, assistant and head volunteer coordinator will be back. Jerry and Tracy even have the menus planned for the year! Kudos to all the kitchen volunteers as well. Because of all our volunteers we can offer food at our Boogies, Dinner Shows, Dinner Delights Bingo, Breakfasts and other events. We know that everything revolves around food!

Do look for the 2018-2019 Ticket Order List to be posted online on the Silveridge web pages by September 1^st. Many of you requested the seating charts for each event. These will be included as an attachment. We ask that everyone (singly or by couple) fill out a ticket order list. You may request a desired seating area and we will try our best to honor your request.

You will be happy to know that my assistant Sharon will be back. Sharon and I and our wonderful office volunteers will be at the Activity office to assist you starting October 1^st. You can call us at 480-373-7700 or email me at sractdr@iiiaz.com with your ticket order. Ticket order requests will be taken in order they were received. Please do not send orders unless you are sending in your order by mail to arrive by Oct 1st. No tickets will be pulled until then.

Please send a check made to Silveridge Activities after we verify your total. We can send your tickets in the mail or you may pick up your tickets when you arrive. We appreciate all your pre orders. You can also buy your tickets when you return but don’t wait too long as some of the events sell out. Thank you in advance for buying tickets and all your support and enthusiasm for our activities!

I am looking forward to sharing my 9^th year with you. You are my extended family and it brings me pleasure to make your experience at Silveridge truly “golden!” Enjoy making memories with your family this summer. Stay healthy and God speed your return to Silveridge. Make sure you stop by the Activity Office when you arrive so we can greet you with a hug.

STATUS UPDATE ON HDTV/INTERNET

“Here’s what I want everyone to remember: “We went into this project to reduce what people had to pay for their television and internet. This was our goal – to be the first 5-star community of our size to have these wonderful and meaningful improvements for years to come – and we’re going to get there as fast as we can.”

It was JFK was pointed out that “The time to repair the roof is when the sun is shining.” Well, it’s time to finish the repairs to the HDTV/Internet and the sun is certainly shining. Hooboy, is it shining. And, as we’ll see in a minute, Mister Sun figures into the planning.

We asked for a status update from Tim Furlong, the Area Supervisor for GDS Communications and the one heading the project at both Silveridge and The Resort. Here’s his overall assessment: “It’s good. Nothing unexpected.” When I expressed surprise that he hadn’t been surprised, he smiled and added, “The more I dig, the more problems I find, but that’s with individual units, not with the park itself.”

As for digging, Tim told us last month that it would be the most time-comsuming part of the project. He’d also explained that they’d focus work on Silveridge before turning to The Resort, so that’s where he started with this month’s assessment:

“The majority of the digging is finished. That’s by far the longest part. Once that’s done, we’re able to do our work and it goes faster.”

How fast?

“A few more weeks of digging, then the team comes in and does the resplicing. That could start by mid-July and we could be finished by the end of July. Then there’s the rebalance, where we adjust the ampliers based on our engineering report.”

So, things are progressing according to plan at Silveridge. I then asked what the folks at The Resort should expect? “They’ll see us in July,” Tim said, “and for sure in August.”

That’s when they’ll bury the lines at The Resort, do the resplicing, add new tops and fittings, then weather-seal and rebalance. All of which will solve the current issues where the heat is affecting the signal.

And that takes us back to working while the sun is shining. There’s simply too much summer sun. Tim asked that we let those in residence at the parks know this:

“As we get closer to the end of the summer, there will be night shifts. During the day, we have to take lots of breaks, so we can be much more productive in the evening. Some nights, we’ll be out there till midnight, or even later. So please don’t be alarmed if you see a ladder and a light.”

Instead of being alarmed, when we see a light and a ladder, let’s be grateful that Tim and his team are committed to getting the project done right before the parks’ season begins.
