Living the Life You Love

sueHere we are friends, almost half way through the season. I hope that you are having the time of your life. Welcome to all of you who came in last month. I hope that you have received a taste of Silveridge by attending the club expo, or just through attending some of our events. Thank you to all our volunteers who make it possible to have all the activities. An appreciation dinner and show planned just for you on March 17th!

Yes, we want you all to have the Good Life and to be happy at Silveridge. The Grant Study spent 20 million dollars and 75 years to research what makes people happy. They discovered that it is not about influence or affluence but finding out from within you what makes you happy. The study concluded a simple theory: “Happiness is Love”

If there is anyone person that lived the life he loved it was Harvey Jamieson.
Our beloved chef and friend passed away on Friday, January 15th. He truly loved to serve hot and delicious meals to all of us. And by making us happy he found happiness! Harvey moved to Silveridge in 1994 and started helping in the kitchen almost immediately. In the 2010 directory you can see him making pancakes. Then in 2006 when the new kitchen was built he took over the reign as head chef. Under his leadership he built the kitchen to what it is today. Jerry Colling and Tracy Gagnier came on board to create the dynamic trio. Along with the 100 volunteers they have served about 70 events in one year and all together put in 260,000 hours! For those of you who knew Harvey well you know he had high expectations of you and demanded strict etiquette of the rules of the kitchen. (We always have an A+ rating!) Anytime Harvey was in the kitchen you could tell he was happy because he loved what he was doing. Harvey fought a courageous battle with cancer. Please keep Joan and his family in your prayers. We will have a Celebration of his life on Friday, March 18th. Let us continue to honor Harvey’s legacy by giving Jerry and Tracy all our support. They are doing a fantastic job!!!

Our family here has been very lucky to have so many dedicated volunteers. A resounding thank you for those who have remained volunteers for years! Unfortunately we have lost many due to sickness or death. That’s life. As your leader, I am looking at that “far vision” I wrote about last month. I encourage you to think about what gifts you have to offer. Think about what makes you happy. Just this year we have new leadership volunteers in the church choir, men’s coffee, woodworking, the kitchen, decorating, and Tai Chi, just to name a few. Come and talk to me or any of the group leaders if you would like to share. There is a place for you. The best thing about volunteering is you start to feel part of the Silveridge family. It’s kind of like the old TV show “Cheers” where everyone knows your name! Do we ever feel happy when we are part of a giving family!

So even if you are not that person of affluence and did not win the recent lottery, let us choose the good life and live the life we love!

Club Expo

The Club Expo was held on Saturday January 9th with about 300 Silveridge residents attended. Many new and existing residents joined our various clubs. Thank you for all those attending our record breaking breakfast and to our Club Leaders for their leadership and dedication.

Message From Sue Activity Director and Editor

Happy New Year to my dear Silveridge family! It’s hard to believe that the season is half over already. Whether you have been her since October or you are just arriving, the best is yet to come! Are we ever lucky to be able to think, create and plan our goals for the New Year?

Daniel Boone once said as he exploring the wilderness that he needed a “near look and a far vision”. As I reflect on our first 3 months of the season I am happy to report that my first goals are in progress. Our new directory is on its way! Thank you for your patience in getting your pictures. The orders have been coming in daily and many of you have reported that you are glad to have them for Christmas gifts. While looking through the 2005 directory I was amazed at how many of our Silveridge family is no longer with us. Pictures evoke memories of dear people who have been a part of our past and makes us appreciate the legacy they have left behind. Stop by the office anytime and take a look at some of the hairstyles and how the people and park has changed in 10 years! January will be busy as I work on all the photos for all the activities in the park. Thank you in advance to club leaders for submitting photos of your classes and groups. If you have not had your picture taken yet make sure you sign up for the week of January 5th– 9th.You must have your
picture taken to receive your free 8×10 picture and directory.

Another goal was to have our first ever pre- Christmas sold out Buddy Holly Christmas Show. Thanks to you- Mission Accomplished! Many of our other shows are getting close to sold out so please come and get your tickets or call ahead to order. And you know the Best is yet to come with 12 more boogies, 4 dinner delights, 3 dinner shows, 2 concerts, and breakfasts. Jerry and Tracy along with Harvey’s mentoring will have 40 meals to prepare for us. More delicious food to come! Please continue to let me know if you have a favorite entertainer or band that you would like me to consider. Starting in January I will be looking at the entertainment for the 2016-17 season. Just for the ladies this year we are having a ladies tea and a shopping day with New Image Fashions. Make sure you bring a tea cup and don’t forget to wear your fancy hats!

Isn’t our new decorating team the best? The ballroom and lobby are beautifully decorated for Christmas and what a great charity event the decorators accomplished with the toy drive for children of military families. Thanks to your generous donations they delivered 82 toys to the Legion.

As you set your goals for 2016, I challenge you to think outside the box. You continually amaze me with your good works. Whether it be driving someone to their doctor appointments or climbing ladders to pick fruit or offering to lead a class; the list is always evolving. You know the meaning of “blessed to bless others”. Let us look forward with positive mental expectancy to being our best and knowing that the best is yet to come!

The New Motto for Silveridge

By Dale Dauten

The results are in, and boy, did I get it wrong. I’d offered up several options for the new motto and even picked a temporary “winner” to use. Then we invited suggestions and put a list of 14 possible mottos up for a vote in our last edition of the The Silveridge Sun.

The winner, and our new motto, is…

The Friendliest Park in the West”

Many thanks to Layton & Wanda Newman, who submitted it.

(What about my personal choice, the one we’ve been using as a stand-in till the voting was finished? That was “Another Great Day in the Park.” It came in a distant sixth. This reminds me of my years owning a market research firm, testing new products and new ads, when I learned a great life lesson, as expressed by Fats Waller: “One never knows, do one?”)

An Attitude of Gratitude

By
Sue, Activity Director and Editor

Picture1Once again the Holidays are approaching. I am thankful for those of you who have arrived safely this last month. Welcome! Silveridge resident Phyliss Woods sent me this timely article about gratitude and I wanted to share a few thoughts with you.

Five reasons to be grateful for gratitude
Sometime soon this holiday season, you’re likely to find yourself sitting or standing around a table, being asked to tell everyone what you’re grateful for. You might think this is a beautiful tradition. Or you might think it’s a hokey one. But you probably don’t think of it as one essential for your mental and physical health. Yet that’s exactly what it is. Through various studies gratitude has been shown to have an exceptionally positive influence on all aspects of our health. What’s more, the benefits of gratitude are extremely long-lasting.

  1. You feel better. In one study people were asked to write a few words of either gratitude or irritation, for a week. It found that people who expressed gratitude experienced fewer aches and pains. They also required fewer trips to the doctor. Gratitude made them measurably healthier.
  2. You take better care of yourself. The same study was somewhat surprised to learn that an offshoot of gratitude was an increase in positive behavior, like exercising more frequently.
  3. You feel happier. Write a letter of thanks to someone from your past or present. Thank you notes always are appreciated. It is a double blessing for the receiver and the giver!
  4. You increase your mental strength. Gratitude makes it possible for you to deal better with the difficulties of life. One study found that Vietnam veterans with higher levels of gratitude experienced lower levels of PTSD.
  5. You increase your self-esteem. By focusing on what you have, instead of what you lack, gratitude helps you step back from the rat race and appreciate what you’ve already achieved.

And may I add that I am most grateful for your kindness and love. You all reach out to others helping in so many ways. How touching it was to see so many of you attend the recent memorials as you shared stories and gave generously to Lou’s jewelry tree.  The decorating committee thanks you!

I am asking that you would continue in that spirit by giving to the children of military families this Christmas. The decorators will have a box labeled in the lobby for you to donate toys and other gifts.

This month marks the beginning of our “dual” newsletter. I mentioned last month that I have a co-partner in our monthly newsletter. Dale Dauten is our new online editor and an accomplished author. I contribute monthly articles and pictures from us and he writes additional park news; such as ideas from our owner, Al LaCanne. Check out a personal story written by one of our own residents. Email dale@dauten.com. if you would like to contribute a story  And don’t forget to vote for our new park motto either online or use the insert in my printed publication . I realize that many of you are not accustomed to reading online. As we transition the newsletter be assured that I will continue to print a smaller version which will be  in your mail boxes with the calendar and advertising inserts.  Additional copies will be at the activity desk. I am grateful for your attitude of continual learning and growth.

Let us continue in the spirit of learning and love as we enter our Holiday Season!
