SILVERIDGE RESIDENT SURVEY Gets BIG RESPONSE

The survey results are in, and any Presidential candidate would long for the type of favorability ratings that residents gave the Silveridge RV Park.

Highlights of the favorable responses…

  • When asked if they would recommend Silveridge to friends or family, 86% gave answers that suggested a clear “yes” (54% giving the park a “9” or
    “10” — with 10 being highest — and another 28% choosing a “7” or “8”).
  • When asked if they felt safe at the park, nine out of ten residents said they did, both during the daylight and nighttime hours.
  • Over three-quarters of the respondents found the staff to “warm and friendly.”

And, in a result that warmed the heart of this writer and that of Sue Arneson,

  • The rating of the newsletters (in print and online) got an average score of 8 out of 10. (We also learned that the two things you would like to see more of are “Updates on the park and its amenities” and “Profiles of clubs and activities.” We’ve heard you. Please see the profile of the tennis club in this issue.)

What about negatives?

There were many people with specific suggestions for improvements in the park or its policies. Of the more than 300 responses that have come is so far, over 200 people took the time to write out answers/suggestions, often commenting on multiple issues. These are being analyzed by Al LaCanne, park owner, and by the team that is responsible for Silveridge.

WE WILL HAVE A SPECIAL FEATURE ON THE SURVEY RESULTS IN THE NEXT ISSUE OF THE SILVERIDGE SUN. That’s when Al will address a number of issues raised by residents.

Asked his reactions to the initial results, Al said,

“I’m pleased to see that so many people took the time to answer our questions and to offer opinions. Thank you to everyone who sent in compliments about the park and the staff. It’s rewarding for me to feel that our multi-million dollar investment in upgrading Silveridge is being appreciated by so many residents.”

He adds,

“As for the things that we didn’t get right, every manager will be studying the residents’ responses and we will use that input to help prioritize what we focus on in the off-season. Within a month we’ll be able to talk in detail about those plans.”

Look for those plans, along with a detailed analysis of how Silveridge stacks up to other Mesa parks, in the next edition of the Silveridge Sun.

Tennis at Silveridge

“We’re Always Looking for More People”

By Sandra Murphy

Marianne Muzio got hooked on tennis when she took lessons after moving to Silveridge. Now she’s vice president of the tennis club.

“A lot of people have doubts when they start. But once they try it, they find out how much fun it is and become competitive,” she says. “We absolutely
love new members. They bring fresh ideas and new abilities to the game and the club. We’re always looking for more people to join us.”

Socialization is an important part of the sport. “It’s like making 120 new friends,” says Marianne. Plus, you get to meet players from other parks. There’s
always plenty to talk about after the final point is scored.

“People tell us Silveridge is one of the friendliest parks in the league,” says Brona Freeman, East Valley Senior Tennis League secretary/treasurer who lives at Silveridge. “People like to come here to play because we try to be good hosts. The entire environment is welcoming.” After the last set, coffee and snacks are served so everyone has a chance to visit and relive the games.

“We’re very supportive of our members,” says Marianne. “We watch each other’s matches and follow our teams through the season.”

Ready to Compete?

The park has four courts available. Two are lighted for evening play. Several times a year, free lessons are offered to beginners. For players who want to improve their game, there are coaches for each team. Everyone is willing to help you succeed and enjoy a new activity.

Silveridge’s tennis club is one of sixteen that make up the East Valley Senior Tennis League’s 3,000 member roster, making it the largest senior league in the country.

“Silveridge has been in the league for many years. As a smaller club, we need more members to keep competing,” Brona says. “Our 3.5 team was combined with Sunland’s team for a couple of years but the big news for the coming season is that they will be separate again. Silveridge players are coming back.”

While league play ends in early March, there are four large tournaments after that. Medals will be given for first, second and third place winners, plus prizes. Look for updates and photos at the residents’ section of the park website (silveridge.com/sun).

GETTING STARTEDBurn More Calories

Tennis is good for mind and body. In a friendly game, tennis players burn more calories than golfers or skaters would in the same amount of time. During competition, calories go up in flames even faster-more than you’d melt during an aerobics class. Burning those calories builds stronger muscle and bone. Tennis improves balance and coordination. Being agile on the court gives you a better chance of staying on your feet if you do trip or slip. An hour’s play can burn 600 calories for men and over 400 for women.

Strengthen Your Brain

It’s not just your body that benefits. Working out in the gym means you can watch TV as you exercise or just let your mind wander. Not so with tennis which works the body and mind simultaneously. Tennis requires creativity, planning and quick decisions as well as being quick on your feet. Scientists believe tactical thinking during a game improves cognitive thinking on and off the court.

Tips for the Intimidated

In baseball, you only get a skinny stick to bat at the ball. In tennis, you get a racquet which has a greater surface area, increasing your odds of connecting with the ball and getting it over the net. Tennis is a great way to improve eye-hand coordination while moving your feet at the same time. There are people willing to teach you the how-to’s of tennis. Once you get the hang of it, you can learn ways to improve your skills. If you play with somebody who’s just a little better than you are, it will encourage you to step up your game too.

You can start at any age. Why not now?

Message From Sue – March 2016

Our Courageous Volunteers

Message From Sue Activity Director and Editor

sue

It is only right that my last message of the season pays homage to our important volunteers. You have heard it before and I will write it again “Silveridge is the special ACTIVE, CARING and PRODUCTIVE Park that it is because of our volunteers!” A big thank you to the 300 plus residents who have served in a volunteer capacity this year. I believe there are three characteristics that I feel describe our volunteers:

1. They unselfishly give their time. Figuring conservatively our volunteers have contributed over 10,000 hours of their time. There are many ways of spending time in retirement. One should do what they want after working all their lives. A volunteer actually enjoys giving their time, gifts and energy to help out where needed. Time is a gift in itself and no one knows what time we have left. We have lost many loved ones this year who were in leadership volunteer positions. We celebrate our volunteers and honor the memory of those that have gone before us for their commitment to our community. Thank you for making your time count!

2. Volunteers want to make a difference. They see an area where they can help and use their background of experience and knowledge to educate and improve the lives of those around them. Kudos to those volunteers in leadership positions. These people spend countless hours preparing and organizing their classes. They come from all different walks of life. We have retired doctors and nurses, pilots, college professors and principles, computer trainers, police and fire officers, musicians, military officers – just to name a few. They know how to “Rock What You Got.” Thank you for sharing your talent

3. Volunteers have courage. Yes, it takes courage to step out of the box. Questions like, Do I really have the abilities to this? What if they don’t like me? What if I forget something or fail at my task? Whenever you start something new doubt comes easy, but courage takes work. It reminds me of the lion in the “Wizard of Oz” who needed courage in life- only to find out that he had it all along. The lion just had to have someone believe in him and tell him that the courage was within him. Thank you for volunteers for your courage!

I have planned a special recognition dinner and entertainment for all my volunteers on Thursday, March 17th. I want to recognize Jerry Colling and Tracy Gagnier and all the kitchen volunteers for stepping up to the plate after our chef, Harvey Jamieson passed away. Because of their leadership and sacrifice of time we were able to keep all our 70 food functions running smoothly and our tummies satisfied! A special thank you to my efficient assistant, Jill Belcher and Jarrod White, my set up person who has helped me and others in so many ways. Both Jill and Jarrod have helped make our Activity Office successful! Our new GM Rhonda and our entire staff have put in countless hours to make our park run smoothly. Thank you to my Mom, my “Balcony Friends” (you know who you are) and to my best friend and husband Jeff who has been my runner for food and supplies. After 47 years of marriage Jeff never knew he would have a second career as a domestic engineer! Thank you for making this the best year ever! Stay healthy and return safely to Silveridge. Watch for my summer newsletter online with a listing of entertainment and apparel to bring. May you all have a safe and healthy summer. Get ready to celebrate my Silveridge Friends. You know that we are the Friendliest Park in the West!
