LOOKING GOOD: The Women Who Dress Up Silveridge<\/h2>\n

\n “Thirty-one times a year! Thirty-one?”\n <\/p>\n

\n That was my response when Yvonne Rowley told me how often the Decorating Team does its work. Then she added, “And it’s not thirty-one times a year: it’s thrity-one times in five months.”\n <\/p>\n

\n For this guy, who is an assistant decorator once a year, at Christmas, that\u2019s hard to imagine. But then I met with the decorators, experienced the humor and energy they bring to their work, and it started to make sense.\n <\/p>\n

\n And if the decorating team didn’t have enough to do, what with pitching in on every boogie, dinner and special event, they also have their annual toy drive, the Silveridge Santa. (Last year, their first, they gathered 80+ toys to donate to local kids via Legion Post #27. This year, with a generous boost from the Billiards Club, they more than doubled last year’s total, at 252 toys. And many of these were wonder toys – bikes and games to delight any kid.)\n <\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

\n When I sat down with team leader Yvonne Rowley, I wondered how she got her start. “When we moved here, Norma Jean Moorefield lived two doors down. Norma Jean is an original – she’s lived here since the park opened \u2014 and she got me into decorating. That was 11 years ago. And she’s still part of our group.” (She’s the one in the photo with the “Grandma is the next best thing to Santa” shirt)\n <\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/table>\n\n\n\n\n\n
\n

\n When asked about her role as the group’s leader, Yvonne gave a little shake of her head and said, “Lou Pickard is Silveridge decorating, not me.” And then she smiled as she recalled stories of the woman who founded the decorating team, how Lou not only took joy in her decorating the ballroom and other facilities, but how she loved to dress for the events.\n <\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

\n For those of you who weren’t around, let me pass along the heartwarming story of the tribute to Lou when she passed away last year. Her children wanted to leave something for the folks at Silveridge who knew and loved Lou, and they offered four boxes of her jewelry. It’s fitting that the decorators turned that jewelry into decorations – they outfitted a special white tree with her jewelry and invited the ladies of Silveridge to take a piece as a memento.\n <\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

\n The team has worked to make sure Silveridge’s decorations continue. Yvonne said, “One big project for last year was organizing the Decorators’ Room.” (The room itself is impressive, its built-in shelving filled with big plastic tubs labeled Mardi Gras or Island or MASH. ) “Several of us are from Canada,” she added as explanation, “and there might come a year where some of us can\u2019t get down. Two of my fellow Canadians, Joan Rosenberger and Wendy Holmoka, spearheaded the effort to make sure we had everything labeled and ready.”\n <\/p>\n

Carpe Annum, “Seize the Year”<\/h4>\n

\n How many of you have ever kept a journal or a diary? \u201c Back in the day\u201d I kept a diary (with a key) where I poured out my heart with what was happening in my life. The internet generation now has new ways of recording the events of our lives. Recently I saw on Facebook how they took your pictures and captured them into the year. Cool! However, sometimes I think we are so busy clicking away that we don\u2019t have the experience of living our lives and being a part of the fun. Most of us have heard the expression \u201cCarpe Diem\u201d (seize the day) but I am wondering how we will we seize the year (\u201cCarpe Annum\u201d) How is it specifically that you want to fulfill your senior years? What do you want to accomplish and journal in 2017? And no excuses that you are too old to learn!!\n <\/p>\n

\n For any big undertaking, you have to take it one step at a time. Like the old saying goes: How do you eat an elephant? One bite at a time. Just saying I want to learn the computer is too general. If you received a new iPhone or iPad why not start learning by taking a SIG class through the computer department? They have beginners to advanced. All of the clubs and event activity instructors devote most of their time to teaching \u2013and only later do they take the time to work on their personal projects. I am proud of all the Club and event leaders as they are trained volunteers who give unselfishly of their time and talent. With the Club Expo on January 14th you can learn about each club and sign up that day. The Expo is always held on the same Saturday as Breakfast so you can attend both.
\n After a full season of learning you will want to show off your talents at the March 11th Craft Fair.\n <\/p>\n

\n Learning something new is not the only way to \u201cseize the year.\u201d How about getting into a new clothes size by exercising while getting healthier? Numerous classes are offered such as Step and Water Aerobics, all kinds of Sports: Tennis, Pickleball, Softball, Golf, Hiking, Shuffleboard, etc. Dancing burns a lot of calories (which you will need after the delicious meals served!) I have 12 Boogies booked for you so you can boogie or come for the meal and enjoy the company. Try Yoga or Tai Chi for mental and physical endurance. Reward your self by just enjoying many of our special dinner shows, dinner delights or concerts. I am thrilled at our attendance to all of our entertainment. Don\u2019t miss our bi annual Anniversary party on January 29th where there will be special recognition and entertainment.\n <\/p>\n

\n As we say in the activity office \u201cIf you are bored it\u2019s your own fault!\u201d A couple of my favorite quotes are:

\n Are you ready to get your creative juices going? Come join the Silveridge Ceramics Club in Room 9 Tuesdays and Thursdays 9-3. We have greenware and bisque for sale and you can special order pieces you might want to do. We have all the tools, brushes and paint for you to use as well as 2 kilns on site. Classes are taught by two Duncan Certified Ceramics teachers: Nancy Lambertson, Club Leader and Jan Billings. We will also have open painting time on Wednesdays.\n <\/p>\n

\n Silveridge Ceramics Club is a $20.00 per year fee and $3.00 per class charge. The class charge includes instruction, tools and most paint. The club charge includes all firings for the year.\n <\/p>\n

Join the club for $20.00 & the Renter’s Association for $5.00. This will give you access to the materials, tools, & expertise. \n Everyone is welcome to join the fellowship and fun of the Silveridge Choir while practicing the songs and hymns of the faith. The choir sings during Silveridge Fellowship Sunday services. Please watch for announcement when practice will begin.\n <\/p>\n

\n We welcome back all our past members and look forward to meeting new participants who would like to join us in the Wood Workers Shop commencing in early November. If you have an interest in working with wood the shop is open from 08:30 AM to 12:00 Noon and 1:00 to 4:00 PM from Monday through Saturday (closed Sunday). Notice of hours will be posted on the shop door if qualified monitors are not available to cover all shifts in early November. Monthly meetings are held the second Wednesday of each Month from November through March. The November meeting will be held on Wednesday, November 9th at 1:00 PM in the shop. A $20 annual fee puts a wide variety of excellent power and hand tools at your disposal. Knowledgeable individuals are available to assist you in learning to use the equipment and for help on your projects. \n If you are a widowed or divorced Silveridge resident and would enjoy activities with others who have suffered a significant loss, we welcome you to our circle of friends. We are here to offer you a caring atmosphere filled with a variety of activities: however, matchmaking is not our purpose or goal.
\n We meet the first Monday of each month at 11:30AM for a sack lunch in Room 4 followed by our business meeting at 12:00 noon. Also, we meet every Friday night with a planned activity. Check our bulletin board in Room 4 for current activities and members. We would like all unattached persons to join us and participate in our fun.<\/p>\n

\n Why stay in your unit and be lonely when you can come be with others, have fun, enjoy lots of conversation and laughs and meet new friends. The Silver Screen<\/h4>\n

\n Our theater is open year round for your viewing pleasure!! And it’s free too!
\n A big thank you to Gary Bryant who has run the movies all summer. Gary tries hard to vary the movies so there is something for everyone. If you have any suggestions call Gary at #480-221-9263 or email him at Gary noc1995@gmail.com. Do watch for movie showings on the park channel, on the marquee by the theater and on the activity board. Starting in November. Movies are being shown on Wednesdays at 1:00pm and Friday and Saturday nights at 7:00pm.<\/p>\n

\n If there are volunteers there will be popcorn available. Please be a team player and offer to stay after the movie to clean up.How about bringing your honey and calling it a date night!
\n How many of you know that the theater has the NFL package (700’s) as well as ESPN? The theater is available to watch sports, but not on a movie day or night Because of the valuable equipment the theater is locked at all times unless there is a scheduled showing for movies, or sports. Only trained operators may run the equipment! Requests for theater sports need to be turned in at the activity desk by noon on Friday. There must be a minimum of six people attending. When reserving the theater, please leave the building clean! If there is a game on Mondays the Social Hall television may be available. Please check with Sue, the Activity Director if you would like to reserve the Social Hall.<\/p>\n

\n The theater is available to all of us. In order to keep things running smoothly a few rules have been established\n <\/p>\n

\n The theater cannot be reserved for a private party for a sports game. Anyone can watch any games. If more than one party wants to watch different sports , the majority rules (over 6) for watching The BIG SCREEN The 8 side televisions are available (without sound) to watch any other sports that may be playing at the same time.\n <\/p>\n

\n Please see me if you want to reserve the sports Big Screen for a game. I try to accommodate everyone with their requests but with more residents in the park at this time of the year please be understanding You may book a private party if it is not during the time of a movie or a previously booked sport event. It is a good idea to book early!\n <\/p>\n

\n If you have visiting guests they are welcome to come but they must be accompanied by you ( the resident.)\n <\/p>\n

\n If you have a private party 90% of the participants must live in the park.\n <\/p>\n

\n Out of park guests may rent the theater at $250.00 for 4 hours, $50.00 for each hour after $500.00 deposit paid in advance (as set by the Home office)\n <\/p>\n
